This tender old-school great will remind you of being eight years old again, walking through your host’s front door and being hit with the delicious aroma of this dish cooking in the oven. This recipe by the late Jackie Olden was featured on Alan Ludden’s Meet the Cook radio spots during the 1970s.
You’ll need:
2 lb. top sirloin or sirloin steak
Flour
Salt and pepper to taste
1 10½-oz. can condensed cream of mushroom soup
½ bay leaf
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
¾ cup water
½ onion, finely chopped or sliced
Cut steak into serving pieces. Dredge steak in flour; brown in hot oil in skillet. Place in casserole dish; season with salt and pepper.
Combine remaining ingredients in skillet drippings; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer for at least 7 minutes or until consistency is that of a gravy, moderately thin but not watery. Pour over steak; cover tightly and bake on bottom oven rack at 325 for 1½ to 2 hours.
Enjoy! (But please keep those elbows off of the table!)
